Papers Please but with zombies, a farming-based shoot-'em-up and other new indie games worth checking out

Several indie titles have caught our attention this week, offering a diverse range of gameplay experiences. Among these is "Quarantine Zone: The Last Check", a farming-based shoot-'em-up inspired by the likes of "Papers Please" but with a zombie apocalypse twist.

In this game from Brigada Games and Devolver Digital, players take on the role of a checkpoint operator during an outbreak, tasked with screening survivors for signs of infection. If unsure, they can send someone to quarantine or a lab for further observation, or let them in. However, get things wrong, and disaster could strike. Fortunately, there's always the trusty sidearm – and a weaponized drone to help deal with sticky situations.

In addition to "Quarantine Zone", Brigada Games is also behind another title, "Air Hares". This one appears to be more of a classic top-down shoot-'em-up, but with an unexpected twist: restoring farmland. Players fire seeds and water to turn barren land into fertile carrot fields, all while dodging enemies – including co-op partners who can join in on the action.

The game has a distinctly '90s-style cartoon aesthetic and features boss battles for added challenge. "Air Hares" is now available on Steam and PC Game Pass, with an initial discount until January 26.

Meanwhile, Luckshot Games' "Big Hops" takes inspiration from classic platformers but with a more joyous, playful vibe. As a young frog trying to find airship parts for a raccoon friend who's promised help in getting home, players will use their tongue to swing across gaps, hookshot through levels, and solve puzzles.

There are tons of movement mechanics on display here – expect a fun experience with a 10 percent launch discount until January 19 on Steam and the Nintendo Switch. "Big Hops" is also available on PS5 for $20.

Cassette Boy appears to be more than just your standard 2D exploration puzzler, though. The pixel-art world can be rotated to discover new secrets – but there's also an element of hiding enemies and hazards from view to move past them. With a runtime of about eight hours and a stellar voice cast that includes Ben Starr, Joel Fry, and more British comedy figures, "Cassette Boy" is available on Steam, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S for $13.

Looking ahead, we've got Aerial_Knight’s DropShot to look forward to, a single-player first-person shooter that involves skydiving with finger guns. Competition ensues as you drop from the sky with just one available parachute – can you grab it before your opponents do? Rounds are fast-paced, generally lasting under a minute.

The full game is set to release on February 17 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Epic Games Store. A demo is currently available on Steam.

Next up is Point-and-click adventure "Earth Must Die", from Size Five Games and publisher No More Robots. With an art style that matches the show's cartoonish tone, this title promises a playable runtime of about eight hours and features a stellar cast including Ben Starr, Joel Fry, and more British comedy figures. The full game will land on January 27.

Lastly, there's something very silly-looking from Monster Shop Games: "Pie in the Sky". This Tony Hawk's Pro Skater-inspired action arcade game puts you in the role of a magpie terrorizing bystanders – knock people off the Sydney Harbour Bridge, ram kids off scooters, go skateboarding, or cause general chaos. And, of course, there are hidden areas to discover.

All we have to do is wait until February 2 for "Pie is the Sky" to swoop onto Steam and add some more colorful fun into our lives.

omg i'm so stoked about all these new indie games this week 🤩! quarantine zone: the last check sounds like such a unique blend of farming and shoot-em-up action, and air hares has that 90s cartoon vibe that's just so infectious 🎨! big hops seems like an absolute blast to play with its tongue-swinging frog mechanics 😆. cassette boy's pixel art world sounds super intriguing, and i love the twist on 2d exploration puzzlers.

anyway, it's always exciting to see what new games are coming out, and there's definitely something for everyone here 🎮💥

I'm so hyped to see all these awesome indie games coming out soon 🎉! The concept of "Quarantine Zone: The Last Check" sounds like a thrilling mix of farming and zombie apocalypse - I can already imagine the stress of making tough decisions to save survivors 😬. Brigada Games seems to be on fire with not one, but two cool titles this month.

And then there's "Air Hares", which looks so adorable with its '90s-style cartoon vibe 🌈! The idea of restoring farmland by firing seeds and water is genius - it's like a match made in heaven for farming sim fans.

I'm also loving the sound of "Big Hops" - who wouldn't want to play as a young frog swinging around levels with their tongue? 🐸 It looks like so much fun, especially with all those movement mechanics on display!

Lastly, I'm curious about "Cassette Boy" - rotating pixel-art worlds sounds like an amazing puzzle adventure. And with a stellar voice cast and 8-hour runtime, it's got my attention for sure! 💡

Can't wait to dive into these games and see what they have in store! 🎮

🤔 So I'm thinking what's up with all these new indie games dropping at the same time? Like, can't they space them out a bit? We've got Quarantine Zone: The Last Check this week and "Air Hares" next month 📆. It feels like there are just so many great options out there right now that I'm having trouble choosing which one to play first 🤯.

And don't even get me started on the discount codes 🤑. 10% off Big Hops until January 19? That's a great start, but what about the rest of us who aren't as lucky as those who snagged it early 💸?

On the bright side though, there are some really cool new gameplay mechanics to check out 😎. Like the idea of rotating levels in Cassette Boy, or using finger guns in DropShot 🔫. It's always exciting to see developers pushing the boundaries of what we expect from a game 🚀.

But what I do wish is that more games would be getting the same level of attention and hype as some of these indie titles 💥. Like, "Pie in the Sky" is already generating so much buzz on social media 🤣, but it's still just a relatively unknown title. Where's the love for smaller devs like Luckshot Games? 🤷‍♂️

omg i'm so down for quarantine zone 🤯 it sounds like such a unique game blend of farming & shoot-em-up goodness i love how the devs are adding that extra layer of challenge with the drone 😄 and i need to get my hands on air hares ASAP its '90s cartoon vibes are giving me life 💖

I'm loving the new indie titles dropping this week 🤩🎮! Quarantine Zone: The Last Check has that Paper's Please vibe but with a zombie twist, and I'm here for it 🧟‍♂️. Air Hares is also super cute with its '90s aesthetic and carrot farm-shooting action 🌱💪. And Big Hops is just too joyful to resist - who wouldn't want to play as a frog swinging around with their tongue? 🐸😄

But what I'm most hyped about is Cassette Boy - the pixel art world rotation mechanic sounds so unique and intriguing 🔍🎨, and that voice cast is fire 🔥. And don't even get me started on Pie in the Sky... a magpie causing chaos in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater style? Yes, please 🤣.

I'm also intrigued by DropShot - skydiving with finger guns sounds like such an adrenaline rush 💥👊. And Earth Must Die looks like a blast with its cartoonish art style and British comedy cast 👍. Bring on February 2nd and all these awesome games! 🎉

🤔 just saw that Quarantine Zone: The Last Check has a zombie apocalypse twist on the farming genre 🌾🧠 anyone else tried this game yet? its gameplay seems pretty intense with those checkpoint screening decisions 🤯

I'm still not sold on this one... how much evidence is there that zombie apocalypse farming games are a thing now? Like, have you seen any credible sources from reputable gaming sites or devs themselves? Just saying, it sounds like a weird mashup of different genres 🤔

Man, these indie games got me thinking... what's the deal with trying to balance responsibility and freedom? Like in "Quarantine Zone", you gotta weigh whether to quarantine someone or let 'em through - it's a heavy burden 😬. But then there's "Air Hares" where you're restoring land and helping out others, that's like finding your purpose 🌱.

And then there's "Big Hops" where the main character is all about exploring and having fun... that's like embracing life's adventures 🎉. But what about games like "Cassette Boy" where you gotta think ahead and hide enemies? That's like preparing for the unexpected 😬.

I guess the takeaway is, we gotta be willing to take risks and try new things, but also know when to hold back and prioritize others... or ourselves 🤔. What do u guys think?

omg i'm so down for quarantine zone 🤣 that drone tho tho... just kidding kinda, it sounds like a super stressful game but also kinda cool? anyway Brigada Games must be living their best lives releasing not one but TWO games this week... air hares is pretty cute though 👀 can't wait to see if the carrot fields are as satisfying as they sound 🥕

man i'm so stoked about these indie games dropping lately 🤩 they're really bringing back that old-school vibe you know like quarantine zone is literally papers please but with zombies and a shootout twist it's so cool

and then there's air hares which is just classic top-down shoot 'em up but with farming in it? what's not to love? the 90s-style cartoon aesthetic is giving me all the feels 🎨

big hops looks like a total blast too, i mean who doesn't love platformers and joyous vibes? plus that frog trying to find airship parts for his friend sounds adorable 🐸

cassette boy seems super deep though with that pixel art world rotation and enemy hiding mechanic it's got me intrigued

anyway, can't wait to try all these games out on steam or whatever console i'm using at the moment 💻

I'm not sure why the government isn't doing more to support indie game developers like Brigada Games and Devolver Digital. I mean, think about it, these are the people creating new IP's that can bring in revenue for the country. Instead of investing in their own games, they're over here begging on Steam and PC Game Pass 🤑. It's a bit too much to take, you know?

just got hyped for quarantine zone lol i mean who doesnt love zombie apocalypse games 🤣 and that farming twist sounds so unique i need to try it out ASAP 💥

Omg I'm so down for Quarantine Zone: The Last Check! 🤯 As a parent, it's always great to see games that teach responsibility and critical thinking skills without being too preachy. The idea of having to make tough decisions about who to let in or quarantine is actually really relatable to what we go through as parents all the time. Plus, the zombie apocalypse twist sounds like so much fun! 😂 I'm definitely going to check out "Air Hares" too - restoring farmland sounds adorable and a great way to teach kids about sustainability. And "Pie in the Sky" is just plain hilarious 🤣 I love that it's a lighthearted, over-the-top game that lets you be a little bit naughty 😜 Can't wait for all these games to drop! 💖

Omg u guys Quarantine Zone sounds like so much fun!! 🤣 I love that its a farming-based shoot-'em-up, who knew zombies could be cute too? And the fact that you can send people to quarantine or labs for further observation is such a great twist, reminds me of Papers Please 😂 Brigada Games is doing a great job with these indie titles, Air Hares looks super fun too with its 90s-style cartoon aesthetic 🎉

Ugh, another bunch of games that'll probably just get lost in the noise 🤦‍♂️. "Quarantine Zone" sounds like a total chore, but hey, who doesn't love playing dead guy all day? And don't even get me started on "Air Hares", farming and shoot-'em-ups, what's next, cooking and baking? 🍳 It's just too much for my eyes. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have co-op partners try to kill you while you're trying to grow carrots? 😂

And then there's "Big Hops", because platformers need more joy and less challenge, right? 🤪 A frog with a hookshot tongue, how original. I'm sure it'll just be another shallow experience that'll leave me feeling empty. And what's up with the long discount period on Steam? Just trying to get rid of games as fast as possible, am I right? 💸

I guess "Cassette Boy" is one of those rare games that might actually live up to its hype, but only time will tell 🕰️. Eight hours of puzzle-solving with voice cast royalty sounds interesting, but we'll see about that.

The last two games, "DropShot" and "Earth Must Die", seem like they might be more my cup of tea - fast-paced shooters and point-and-click adventures are usually where it's at for me 🎮. But then there's "Pie in the Sky", which is just...well, I don't even know what to say about that one 😂. It's either gonna be a genius comedy game or a trainwreck, and I'm not sure which way I'm leaning 💥.

Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic about these releases, but we'll have to wait and see how they hold up 🤔.

I'm loving this week's indie game releases! 🎮 The combination of farming-based shoot-'em-ups with zombie apocalypses (Quarantine Zone: The Last Check) and classic top-down shooters with farming themes (Air Hares) is genius. I mean, who wouldn't want to clear infected survivors from a checkpoint while growing carrots? 😂 It's games like this that remind me why indie dev studios are so amazing – they're not afraid to think outside the box.

And then there's Big Hops which seems like it's just going to make you smile the whole time. A fun platformer with tongue-swinging mechanics and airship-hopping... I'm sold! 🐸💨 The art style on Cassette Boy also caught my eye - I love how they've incorporated rotation mechanics to reveal secrets, adding a new layer of depth to exploration.

Looking forward to DropShot's finger-gun skydiving action and Earth Must Die's point-and-click adventure. And Pie in the Sky? Why not?! 🤣 It sounds like another fun release that'll bring some colorful chaos into our lives on February 2. Can't wait! 😆
