France says will support EU designation of Iran’s IRGC as ‘terrorist’ group

France appears to have walked back its opposition to the European Union's plan to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The decision comes after Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that France will support the designation, citing the "unbearable repression" of Iranian protesters and the need for accountability.

Barrot's statement was made in response to the ongoing crackdown on antigovernment protests across Iran, which has resulted in widespread violence and an estimated 6,221 deaths. The French government had previously been hesitant to support the designation, fearing it could lead to a complete break in ties with Iran and negatively impact diplomatic relations.

However, Barrot's reversal suggests that France is shifting its stance in response to the international community's growing criticism of the Iranian government's actions. The EU foreign ministers are set to meet in Brussels on Thursday, where they will likely approve the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

The move has been spearheaded by Italy, and it comes amid global pressure on Iran to address human rights concerns. Other countries, such as Canada and Australia, have already designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

Iran's government has dismissed the EU's plans, warning of "destructive consequences" if they go ahead. The country has also summoned the Italian ambassador over Rome's leadership in the move.

OMG u guys 😱 i cant even right now... france is finally showing some backbone after all the protests and deaths in iran 🤯 its about time we stand with the ppl who r fighting 4 their rights, not 4 a corrupt gov that dont care about human life 💔 jean-noel barrot is literally a hero for speaking up against this regime and i hope others do the same 🙏 the eu finally doing whats right by designating the irgc as a terrorist org is a huge deal 🤝 its been so frustrating watching all these countries play it cool while ppl r dying in iran 🤦‍♀️ at least now we got some real action happening 💪 lets keep the pressure on and hope that other countries follow suit 👊

I'm kinda curious about this, so what's the big deal with Iran's protests? 🤔 I mean, yeah, 6k deaths is a lot, but it sounds like the Iranian government is cracking down hard on people who are just speaking out. Does anyone know what's really going on there? Is it just the usual authoritarian governments being super repressive or is there something more to it?

And what's up with all these countries agreeing to label Iran's IRGC as a terrorist org? 🤝 I mean, isn't that kinda a big deal for international relations? Do they think it'll actually make a difference in stopping human rights abuses? It seems like a pretty symbolic move to me. Will it lead to more sanctions or what?

It's also interesting that France changed its mind about supporting this designation. Was there some kind of pressure from other EU countries or the US? 🤝 I've heard that Italy was the one who started pushing for this, so maybe they played a bigger role in getting everyone on board?

the eu thinks it can just dictate to iran and get away with it? i mean, what about when it happens in europe or america? is everyone gonna get designated a terrorist just because they're protesting? 🤔♂️🚫 barrot's just trying to save face after france got roasted for being all wishy-washy on this. and now the EU's gonna ram this through with no discussion? please, what about human rights then? it's just another way to bully iran into line. 😒

🤔 So what do you think about France changing its mind on designating Iran's IRGC as a terrorist organization? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, it's good that they're finally acknowledging the human rights situation in Iran is pretty messed up 😢. But at the same time, are we really just going to start labeling entire groups of people as terrorists for being anti-government? It feels like we're walking into a minefield over here 💣.

And what's with all the backpedaling on this one? 🔄 It seems like France was all in until recently, and now they're just kinda... along for the ride 🚂. I hope they don't lose sight of what's really important here - holding those in power accountable for their actions 💯.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out globally. Will other countries follow suit? And how will Iran react? 😬 We might be about to witness some pretty intense diplomatic fallout 🔥.

🤦‍♂️ So, now that France is finally supporting the EU's plan to designate Iran's IRGC as a terrorist organization, it's like they're trying to make up for lost time... or just prove they're not completely out of touch with reality 🙄. I mean, who needs diplomatic relations when you've got human rights on the line? And Italy is basically leading the charge on this one – I guess that means France isn't as "éloquent" as they thought 😒. But hey, at least they're taking a stand now... after weeks of hesitation 🕰️. Guess you could say they're finally "enlightened" about the situation 💡.

omg can't believe france is finally standing up to Iran 😂🇫🇷 i've been saying for ages that Iran's human rights record is bloody horrific and now it seems like europe is finally taking action 💪 barrot was so brave to speak out about the protests and the deaths of those poor protesters 🤕 but seriously if france wasn't behind this designation wouldn't it be just more of business as usual with iran? i mean we all know they're not exactly known for respecting human rights anyway 😒 fingers crossed that eu gets the approval on thursday 💯

🤔💡 so i think france is finally getting on board with this irgc thing... 🚫 it makes sense tho, all those protests and deaths... 6k+ ppl lost their lives 🙏 and the eu's all like "accountability" 🤝 which sounds good to me. but i'm not sure how this'll play out in real life... 🌎👀 will france just chill with its new stance or are they gonna, like, sever ties with iran entirely? 🤷‍♂️ anyway, here's a lil diagram to illustrate the situation:

```
+---------------+
| EU Foreign |
| Ministers |
+---------------+
|
| _______
| / \
/ \
+----+ +----+ +----+
| IRGC | | EU | | Iran Gov
+----+ +----+ +----+
| _______/
| / \
/ \
+----+ +----+ +----+
| Terror | | EU | | Global
| Org | | Plan | | Pressure
+----+ +----+ +----+
```

📝 that's my two cents!

I'm not surprised about this lol 😒. It's all about playing the diplomatic game, right? They're just trying to save face and pretend like they care about those protesters in Iran 🤷‍♂️. France was already half-hearted about designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization, so it's not like they're making a huge sacrifice here 💸. It's all about maintaining relations with Iran, even if it means giving them a slap on the wrist 🤹‍♀️. Meanwhile, the Iranian government is just playing dumb and denying any wrongdoing 🙄. Give me a break! 😒

OMG, I'm literally so hyped about this news 🤩!! France finally comes around and supports designating Iran's IRGC as a terrorist org, it's about time 🙌! I mean, can you believe those protests back in Iran? 6k+ deaths?! 😱 It's horrific. And the EU is like "okay, we've had enough" 👊. Italy was all like "let's do this" and now other countries are following suit 🤝. It's about accountability for those human rights abuses. I'm so down for more global pressure on Iran to step up their game 💪. France finally stands by the EU's decision, it's a win-win in my book 🎉!

🤯 I'm like super hyped about this news! France finally listening to the world and taking a stand against Iran's human rights abuses 🙌. I mean, 6,221 deaths is just insane 😱. The EU has gotta do what's right here. Italy was like the one pushing for this and now everyone else is following suit 💪. It's about time countries put pressure on Iran to stop repressing their people 💥. Let's see if it actually makes a difference 🤞.

🤔 think france is trying to find a balance here... on one hand, they're still not super keen on the idea of totally cutting ties with iran but then they see all these protests and deaths happening and it's hard to just turn a blind eye... barrot's words do sound pretty damning about the repression in iran tho, might be a way for france to show it's taking the situation seriously without completely going against its own interests... 🌎

😔 I'm thinking about all those innocent people dying in Iran... it's just heartbreaking 🤕. I feel like France is doing what's right by supporting the EU's plan, but at the same time, I worry about how this will affect diplomatic relations with Iran 😬. It's like they're playing a delicate game of cat and mouse here... one step forward, one step back 🙄. I just hope that Iran's government starts to listen to their people and makes some real changes 💖. This is such a tough situation 🤯.

🤔 I don't know about this... on one hand, it's good to see some countries finally taking action against Iran's human rights abuses 🕊️. Those 6,221 deaths are just crazy, and if anyone can make them accountable, it's gotta be the EU. On the other hand, I'm not sure how effective this whole thing is gonna be 🤷‍♂️. We're talking about a country that's basically run by a military dictatorship here... what makes us think they'll actually change their ways? And what's the real motivation behind this move - is it just for show or is there something more to it? 🤑 Also, what about the impact on global politics and Iran's relationships with other countries? It's gonna be interesting to see how this all plays out...

🤔 So now France is backing down on this one? Like what changed their minds? Was it just a bunch of international pressure or did they actually see some proof that Iran was indeed being super repressive? 📰 I need to know more about how France decided to flip on this one. It's not like they were the only one holding back, so why now? 👀
