US congressman meets five-year-old Liam Ramos and his father at ICE detention center – as it happened

US Congressman Joaquin Castro met with five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father at the Dilley detention center in Texas on Monday. Castro shared a photograph of the meeting on social media, saying he told Liam "how much his family, his school, and our country loves him and is praying for him." The visit comes after Liam was detained by immigration agents last week while walking home from preschool. His father said that Liam has been depressed since being at Dilley.

The meeting marked the latest effort by Castro to raise awareness about the issues faced by families separated by US immigration policy.

omg this is so sad 🤕 the fact that a 5yo kid is being held in detention centre just because his parents are immigrants is just heartbreaking 😭 my heart goes out to liliam and his dad 🤗 i wish more ppl would come forward like congressman castro to raise awareness about this issue it's not fair to kids like liliam who dont even know what's happening 🙅‍♀️ school should be a safe space for all kids, not a place where they can get torn away from their families 📚💔

🤕🌎 just saw this news and its breaking my heart 🤗👧🏻iam is only 5 yrs old 🤷‍♂️ how can he go thru this 😩 his family is suffering so much 🚫🔒 and Castro is trying to help 💖📸 sharing pics of them on social media is a great way to spread awareness 🌟👀 but we need more change 🔄💪 everyone should be treated with love & respect ❤️🙏 especially kids like liam 👧🏻 they dont deserve this 😢

This is so heartbreaking 🤕 what's going on with these detention centers?! A 5-year-old kid, just walking home from preschool, and they separate him from his family? It's insane 😱. I'm all for stricter immigration laws, but not at the cost of traumatizing innocent kids like Liam. His dad is saying he's been depressed since being detained, poor guy 🤝. And now Castro shows up with a photo op, sharing how much everyone loves him... it's just a PR stunt, right? 😒 I wish more people would take action and actually support these families rather than just posting selfies on Instagram 📸. We need to do better as a country, for the kids' sake! 👦

I'm so sad about this little guy's situation 🤕🌪️ it's just not right that a 5-year-old is going through this. Can you even imagine being taken away from your family and sent to some detention center? 🚫💔 I mean, Castro tried to do something good here by visiting him, but it's not enough, right? We need more people to speak up about these issues and demand change 💪🌟 The fact that Liam has been depressed since being at Dilley is just heartbreaking... what can we even do to help these families? 🤔 It's time for us to take action and make sure something like this never happens again!

OMG, this is so sad 🤕🏠! I mean, a 5-year-old kid gets detained by immigration agents and his family is all like "what's gonna happen next?" 😩 It's not right that little Liam has to go through this. His dad said the kid's been depressed since being at Dilley detention center? That's just heartbreaking 💔.

I think it's awesome that Rep Castro is stepping up to raise awareness about these issues, though 🙌! As a country, we gotta do better by our own kids, you know? We can't just leave them in limbo while their parents try to figure out the situation. The gov needs to make some changes, for sure 🤝.

It's also kinda cool that Castro shared a photo of himself with Liam and his dad on social media 💕. It shows that he's willing to listen and help these families, even if it's just in small ways. We need more people like him doing this kind of work ❤️!

just saw this and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it... a 5-year-old kid, detained in a center meant for adults, because of something his parents did when they crossed the border... meanwhile, we're talking about how much love and country support he's getting from some congressman 🤯. the thing is, this kid's just trying to get back to his normal life - school, family, friends... shouldn't that be the priority? not some politician's photo op 📸.

🌟 just saw this article and it's breaking my heart. a 5-year-old kid, walking home from preschool, gets detained by immigration agents... can't even imagine how scared and traumatized he must've been 😔. it's heartbreaking to think that a child is being treated like an adult in this situation. congressman castro's visit is a good start, but we need more action to be taken to address this issue 🤞. it's not just about raising awareness, but also about taking concrete steps to prevent families from getting torn apart in the first place 💪. and what really gets me is that Liam has been depressed since being at dilley... a 5-year-old kid who's lost his childhood already 😭. we need to do better, folks 🌟

just saw this news and i gotta say its heartbreaking, a 5 yr old kid locked up in a detention center because his parents want a better life for him? can u imagine being that little kid? depressed since he's been there its just not right, the kid should be playing with friends, riding bikes, and enjoying childhood, instead hes stuck behind bars. congressman castro trying to raise awareness is good but what about concrete changes? when will this happen? the system needs a overhaul, we cant keep separating families like thats nothing

Ugh, this is just so messed up 🤯. I mean, a 5-year-old kid gets detained by immigration agents because his parents aren't good enough for the US? That's not immigration policy, that's human cruelty 😔. And what really gets me is how we're just supposed to gloss over it with feel-good moments like Castro's photo op 📸. Newsflash: a picture doesn't fix the problems of families being torn apart by our own laws 🤷‍♂️. We need real solutions, not just PR stunts. And what about Liam's dad, who's been through hell already? Doesn't he deserve better than a politician's smile and some empty words? 😒

Just saw this and its heartbreaking 🤕. A 5-year-old kid is already dealing with separation anxiety from his family, depression... how can that be? It's a child, for crying out loud! He shouldn't have to go through all this because of some adults' decisions. The fact that Castro took the time to visit him and show some love is a step in the right direction, but its not enough. We need systemic changes to prevent these families from being torn apart. I mean, what's going on with our country? Can't we just treat each other with humanity?

😩 its so sad what these kids have to go through, being detained & separated from their family... a 5 year old who just wants to go home and play with his friends 🤣... congressman castro is trying to make a difference but it feels like this is so much bigger than one meeting 👥. what can we do as a society to prevent these families from going through this trauma? 🤔👫

omg this is so sad 😭 Liam is only 5 and he's already going through this 🤕 his dad is super worried about him too 🤗 I don't get why ppl have to be detained like that 🚫 it's not faaaaair 😔 what if he was lost or something? wouldn't they try to help him instead of locking him up? 🤷‍♀️ and poor Liam, being depressed already... 🤕 I wish more ppl would stand up for kids like this 🙏🏼 Castro seems like a good guy tho 👍

🤔 this is so sad what's going on in those detention centers, a 5-year-old kid got detained while just walking home from preschool... 🚫 it's not right, kids should be able to go to school without worrying about being taken away by immigration agents. 📚💔 I think congressmen like Joaquin Castro are doing a good job in bringing attention to this issue, we need more people speaking out against it. 👮‍♂️👥 Castro's visit was a great step towards raising awareness, now let's hope some real change comes from it... 🤞

🤕 This is so sad, man... I mean, a 5-year-old kid gets detained at a detention center and his dad can't even pick him up because of some immigration laws? It's like, what's going on here? 🙄 I feel for the little dude, Liam. Being stuck in that place must be super tough for him. His family is already stressed out and now he's dealing with depression... it's just not right. 🤝 As a congressman, Joaquin Castro should know better than to let kids get caught up in this mess. But I guess it's all part of the job, right? 🤔 At least he showed up and tried to lift Liam's spirits. That's gotta mean something, right? 💕

Ugh, it's just so heartbreaking to see a 5-year-old kid like Liam being detained and traumatized 🤯💔. I mean, what does he even do wrong? He's just trying to get home from preschool and ends up getting caught in this massive mess that our country is dealing with.

I'm glad Rep. Castro is doing his part to bring awareness to the issue, but it's like, what are we actually doing about it? We need more concrete actions than just visits and social media posts 📸💪. I wish he'd push for some real reform, like ending family separation policies once and for all.

And poor Liam, being depressed since he got detained... that kid needs a lot of love and support, not just a pat on the back from a politician 👍💕. We need to do better by our children, especially those who are already vulnerable. This isn't just a moral issue, it's a human rights one 🌎👫.

OMG, poor lil dude 🤕🌎! Can't believe he's goin thru this at such a young age 😭. It's so heartbreaking that Liam had to experience that kinda trauma. I'm all for politicians like Castro doin somethin about it tho 💖... we need more ppl in power who care about our communities & kids 🌟! Castro's efforts might just be the push needed 2 make a change 🔥. Hope Lil Ramos gets back to his normal life soon, and that his family is gettin the support they deserve ❤️💕

🌟 I just saw this and my heart is breaking for that little kid, Liam! Detained as young as 5 years old? It's just not right. 🤯 The fact that he was depressed after being taken away from his school and family is a harsh reminder of the trauma these families go through. As a society, we need to do better. We need to raise awareness about these issues and demand change. 🙌 It's great that Congressman Castro is taking a stand, but it's not just one person who can fix this problem. We all have a role to play in creating a more compassionate and just system. 💖

just saw this news about this little kid who was separated from his dad in a detention center 🤕 and I'm still trying to process it... five years old, just walking home from preschool, and he ends up stuck in some kinda system that's supposed to be meant for people looking for a better life. it's like, what even is the point of all this? 😔 Castro visiting him is a step in the right direction, but we need more than just a visit to fix these kinds of problems... like, real change 🙏

🤕 this is just heartbreaking, imagine a 5 year old going through this and his family trying to cope with it 🤯... it's like, we're supposed to be a country that values love, family, and childhood, but instead we're putting kids like Liam in detention centers 🚫. it's all about politics and borders, not about what's best for the kid 👶. Castro doing his part by raising awareness is appreciated, but we need more than just visits from politicians to fix this mess 🤔... we need real policy changes that prioritize families over fear-mongering 🌎.
